Excursion: Rocks Walking Tour

On Monday the 6th of May years 3, 4, 5 and 6 participated in an excursion to The Rocks. They made their way into the city by bus, driving over the  Harbour Bridge and taking in the view. Once in The Rocks the students were split into two groups to further their understanding of the history of the area.

Years 3 and 4 have been learning about the arrival of the First Fleet throughout term one. Through this tour they were able to dress as a real person from 1788. These significant people ranged from convicts and free settlers to soldiers. They were each given an information card with their history and reason for coming to Australia. They then explored the area with their guide who gave insight into what the area would have looked like at the time and the role their person played.

Years 5 and 6 used this exploration to commence their history unit for the term, The Australian Colonies. With their guide they were able to explore The Rocks, known as Tallawoladah in the local Cadigal language, and see the important role this place has had throughout our history. They also learnt about the lifestyle, social history and heritage of the area.

All of the students enjoyed eating their lunch at Dawes Point Battery where they took in some more history of the area and enjoyed the fabulous view. We learnt that Dawes Point, known as Tar-ra in the local Cadigal language, is the site of the first documented interaction between the local Cadigal people and the settlers.

A big thank you to the students who were all so interested and engaged throughout the day as well as to the teachers who facilitated their learning.
