Festival of Choral Music 2024

Students

We sang at the Opera House!

On Tuesday 13th August, our Years 3 - 6 Choir students performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the annual Festival of Choral Music. It was a very big day that started with a combined choir rehearsal in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House, then an extended dinner break with family. The concert commenced at 6.30pm, and it was a magnificent showcase of singing, music and what Public Education can offer our primary students across New South Wales.

This year, it was a particularly special concert as a small group of Tiwi women from the Tiwi Islands travelled to the Sydney Opera House to witness one of their cultural songs, "Wunijaka", being performed by the students. The women watched the rehearsal, and then started to dance to accompany the music, which became an incredibly special and powerful moment for the students to be a part of. These women also performed their version of "Wunijaka" to the students, and translated and explained some of the Tiwi language in the song.

During the short rehearsal break, Dee Why students were asked by the Arts Unit to be photographed with the Tiwi women to record this landmark musical occasion. What an incredible privilege!

Overall, our Choir students sang and behaved beautifully throughout the day, showcasing all their hard work and dedication to the FOCM repertoire throughout the year.

Well done, DWPS Choir students! 🙂
